Understanding Medicare: Your Guide to Coverage
Part A
Part A is premium free for people who are 65+ years and have paid, or whose spouse has paid, Medicare taxes for at least 10 years while employed. People who qualify for Medicare because of certain disabilities also qualify for premium free Part A.
- Some Home Health Care
- Inpatient Care in Hospital
- Nursing Home Care (Inpatient care in a skilled facility thats not custodial or long term care)
Part B
Part B helps cover medically necessary services and supplies that Part A does not, such as:
- Doctor visits and other outpatient care
- Ambulance Service
- Durable Medical Equipment DME
- Mental Health
- Certain preventive services, like flu shots and cancer screenings
Part C (Medicare Advantage)
Part C plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They include all the benefits of both Part A and Part B, and often provide extra coverage.
Part C Covers
- All services covered by Part A and Part B (except for hospice care, which is covered by Original Medicare)
- Extra benefits often not covered by Original Medicare, such as vision, hearing, and dental care
- Most Part C plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D)
Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Part D is prescription drug coverage offered by private insurance companies that have been approved by Medicare. It is designed to help you pay for self-administered prescription drugs. You can get this coverage in one of two ways
- As a stand-alone plan: If you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you can enroll in a separate Part D plan
- As part of a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C): Many Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage as part of a bundled plan.
- The cost of Part D varies by plan. It can include a monthly premium, an annual deductible, and copayments or coinsurance for your prescriptions.

You can be entitled to a Special Enrollment Period on certain life events, for example, if you move or lose ongoing coverage. Special Enrollment Periods vary in length.
This period is every year from October 15th to December 7th. Existing Medicare beneficiaries can use this period to review, reevaluate and make appropriate changes to their Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D). You cannot use AEP to enroll in Part A and/or Part B for the first time. Coverage starts on January 1 of the following year.
This period is every year January 1st to March 31st. Although most individuals will get Part B coverage when they sign up for Medicare, this duration is reserved for those individuals that failed to enroll in Part B when they were first eligible. Your coverage starts the month after you sign up. You might pay a monthly late enrollment penalty, if you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
This period is every year from January 1st to March 31st. During this time, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan with or without drug coverage, or switch to Original Medicare and can get a Medicare prescription drug plan. You however cannot switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan join a prescription drug plan if you’re in Original Medicare, or switch from one prescription drug plan to another prescription drug plan.
Only one can be selected, you can’t have both plans. You must choose either a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medigap plan. To get the appropriate plan between the two, we recommend calling us to determine which option is best for you.
