You can be entitled to a Special Enrollment Period on certain life events, for example, if you move or lose ongoing coverage. Special Enrollment Periods vary in length.

This period is every year from October 15th to December 7th. Existing Medicare beneficiaries can use this period to review, reevaluate and make appropriate changes to their Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D). This period is every year January 1st to March 31st. Although most individuals will get Part B coverage when they sign up for Medicare, this duration is reserved for those individuals that failed to enroll in Part B when they were first eligible. Your coverage starts the month after you sign up. You might pay a monthly late enrollment penalty, if you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

This period is every year from January 1st to March 31st. During this time, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan with or without drug coverage, or switch to Original Medicare and can get a Medicare prescription drug plan. You however cannot switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan join a prescription drug plan if you’re in Original Medicare, or switch from one prescription drug plan to another prescription drug plan.
